AI Overviews Are Eating Your Clicks: How to Win in the SGE Era

Google now answers a huge slice of searches before anyone scrolls. The AI Overview sits at the top, summarises three or four sources, and a chunk of people get what they came for without ever clicking a link. If your traffic charts have started to wobble, this is probably why — and pretending it isn't happening won't fix it.

The good news? Visibility hasn't vanished. It has moved. Below is exactly how we help clients stay in the conversation and still pull real visitors to their site.

What actually changed (and what didn't)

For years the game was simple: rank position one, win the click. Now Google often drafts its own answer using your content, names a few sources, and the searcher decides whether your page is worth a visit. Informational queries — "what is", "how does", "best way to" — take the biggest hit, because the Overview can satisfy them outright.

But here's the part people miss. Queries with intent to act — to buy, book, compare prices, find someone local — still send clicks, because an AI summary can't sign a contract or take your order. The traffic that converts is largely intact. The traffic that was always a bit fluffy is the part bleeding away.

Key takeaway

Stop measuring success by raw sessions alone. Track which queries still earn clicks and conversions, protect those, and reshape your content around them.

Become the source the answer cites

When an Overview pulls from three or four pages, being one of them is the new front page. To get picked, your content needs to be the clearest, most quotable version of an answer on the web.

  • Answer the question in the first two sentences. Lead with a tight, direct response, then expand. AI systems lift the cleanest summary they can find.
  • Use plain definitional language. "An X is a Y that does Z" beats a meandering paragraph every time.
  • Break complex topics into scannable chunks — short headings, lists, one idea per section. Machines parse structure the same way busy humans skim it.
  • Add original data, numbers and first-hand findings. A unique statistic or a result from your own work is something the model can't generate on its own, so it reaches for your page.

We rewrote a client's "how-to" guide into this shape — answer first, evidence second — and watched it start appearing as a named citation within a few weeks. Their click-through from the Overview wasn't enormous, but the visitors who arrived were already half-convinced.

Feed Google structured data so it understands you

AI systems trust pages they can read without guessing. Schema markup is how you hand Google a clean, labelled version of your content: this is an FAQ, this is a product with this price, this is a business in this city with these reviews.

Mark up your articles, FAQs, products, and especially your business details. For anyone serving a specific area, structured local data is doing heavy lifting right now — it's a big reason our local SEO services keep clients showing up in map packs and AI answers even as classic blue links shrink. If structured data feels like a foreign language, that's fine; it's a one-time setup that pays off for years.

Build a brand the algorithm recognises

Here's something that surprises people: AI Overviews lean heavily on brands they "know". When a name shows up consistently across reviews, mentions, social profiles and other sites, Google treats it as a more reliable source. A faceless website with no footprint gets passed over.

  • Earn mentions on industry sites, local press and directories — even unlinked ones count toward recognition.
  • Keep your name, details and tone consistent everywhere, from your about page to your social bios.
  • Encourage genuine reviews. They're social proof for humans and trust signals for machines at the same time.

A steady presence across social channels isn't just for likes anymore. It's part of how search engines decide whether you're a real, trusted business worth quoting.

The brands that win the AI era aren't the loudest. They're the ones that show up reliably, everywhere, saying the same true thing.

Shift your content toward the bottom of the funnel

If top-of-funnel "what is" articles now get answered on the results page, the smart move is to invest more in content that lives where the Overview can't fully serve the searcher:

  1. Comparison and "vs" pages — people weighing two options want a real opinion and a recommendation.
  2. Pricing and "how much does it cost" content — high intent, hard for a generic summary to nail.
  3. Case studies and proof — "we did this for a client and here's what happened" can't be faked by a model.
  4. Buyer guides for your specific service or city — the closer to a decision, the more the click matters.

This is also why a strong portfolio of results earns its keep: it answers the only question a ready buyer really has, which is "can you actually do this?"

Quick win

Audit your top 20 blog posts. Any pure-definition piece losing clicks should be reworked to target a comparison, a decision, or a local intent — or merged into a deeper, more useful guide.

Don't ignore the channels Google doesn't control

One lesson from all this is the danger of renting your entire audience from one platform. If a single algorithm tweak can erase a third of your traffic, you want other doors open: an email list, a returning social following, referrals, and paid placement for the searches that truly matter to your revenue. Diversification isn't pessimism — it's just sensible.

A simple plan to start this week

  • Identify your highest-intent pages and make sure they load fast, answer clearly, and ask for the next step.
  • Rewrite three informational posts to lead with a crisp, citable answer.
  • Add or fix schema on your key pages and business profile.
  • Claim and polish your reviews, directories and social presence.
  • Plan one comparison or case-study piece a month from now on.

The SGE era rewards substance, clarity and a recognisable brand — which, honestly, is what good marketing always rewarded. It's just less forgiving now. If you'd like a clear-eyed look at where you stand and what to fix first, book a free audit with our team and we'll map it out with you.
